18:08 2017 Audi Q8 Rendered Audi's entry into the growing four-door-coupe-SUV market. | |
The 2017 Audi Q8 will be one of up to four coupe-like crossover derivatives that Audi plans to add to its lineup. If all projects see production, there will be a Q2 based on the A1; a lower, sportier, three-door version of the Q3 called the Q4; and a Q6, which would be based on the Q5. The Q8 will be the largest of the group, using the Q7 as its basis. The sporty SUV segment still has lots of untapped potential. Audi seeks to replicate the unexpected success of the BMW X6 and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport. And a sporty SUV will add a further element of cachet to the brand's lineup among certain buyers. Just like the next-generation Q7—and the Q5 and Q6—the Q8 will be based on the Volkswagen Group's MLB platform. This model will share the Q7's track and wheelbase, and a lot of components with Audi's current passenger cars. The MLB platform essentially is a front-wheel-drive architecture, but all Q8 models will be fitted with Quattro all-wheel drive. Theoretically, the MLB bones offer nearly endless possibilities, but given the upmarket positioning of the Q8, we expect only V-6 and V-8 engines to be offered. The most likely candidates are the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine in multiple strengths, as well as the 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel engine and the turbocharged 4.0-liter gasoline V-8 for possible high-performance SQ8 and RS Q8 variations. A plug-in hybrid is a strong possibility and is the only model that could conceivably be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, although we think a V-6 is more likely for the internal-combustion component. Power will be transmitted through a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic; Audi's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is a less likely candidate because it could limit the Q8's towing capabilities. As if that will matter much.
